Back when I lived in Queens and was working in publishing (pre-grad school), I got the urge one October to do a series of witches. Sitting down at my table with a blank page in front of me, this next one was the first to come out:

And the rest followed. These were my favorites.
I did 13 in all, and the late (and very missed) Tom Spurgeon shared them on his blog The Comics Reporter. It was the first time anyone publicly shared or promoted any of my art and it meant a TON that he did that.

There’s a deep love of monstrosity in my soul and I don’t get a chance to let it out (in illustration) very much these days, but maybe’s it’s time.

It’s very funny and interesting to look back on these and see what’s changed and what hasn’t about my drawings. More than anything, this just takes me back to what I was feeling 16 years ago, which is a magic trick in itself.
